AO is working with a long time local Hawiian family to build their new home in the ‘up-country’ area of Maui. Downslope of the Haleakala Volcano, the site is surrounded by agriculture and ranchland with sweeping views to the ocean and the volcanic mountain Pu’ Kukui to the west. Using simple and single story gabled ‘bars’, we assembled three parallel to one another, to create a variety of outside rooms in between them. These bars bridge the entry areas ot the southeast and the view toward the northwest and ocean below.
In between the bars, are 4 different kinds of ‘courts’. The Entry Court is anchored by a statuesque All-Spice Tree, which dominates the view from the kitchen and breakfast area. The court opposite that looks toward the ocean is the inside-outside space of the Lanai, where most of the action happens. On the other side of the middle bar are again two courts, one being the day to day parking and family and office entries, and opposite toward the view is ‘spa’ court, with a garden, terrace and sauna that is flanked by the primary bedroom.
Construction is set to begin in the fall of 2025.
