Cove Hollow Farm Road Residence
The Cove Hollow Farm Road Residence is a multi-generational family compound that combines modern and historic structures harmoniously in an agrarian setting. AO relocated a century old farmhouse on the site, with careful consideration for its appearance from the road as well as the integrity of the timber framing itself, and then situated a spacious contemporary home, pool house, and landscaped areas sensitively around the historic structure. With the farmhouse anchoring the corner of the site, the new buildings are arranged along a central axis according to their functional needs resulting in a congruous composition of interior and exterior spaces.
The central living area serves as a threshold between the hard edged, formal lawn to the north and the more organic, casual garden to the south while minimally framed exterior glass window walls dissolve the enclosure providing curated glimpses between inside spaces and the surrounding landscape. The kitchen located steps from a dining terrace, grill, and vegetable garden enjoys bright morning sun while a sunken lounge sets eye level to just peek above the lush encompassing perennial gardens. The central stair slides through the wood clad first floor ceiling unfurling the soft wood palette from above while upstairs an open reading area is flanked by generous bedrooms and the rooftop succulent garden.
With the entire site served by a new geothermal well, the houses incorporate energy efficient mechanical systems, as well as high-performing envelopes designed to withstand seaside storm conditions. The crafted landscape of indigenous vegetation preserves the pastoral atmosphere and contributes to the local ecology.
