Mavericks
Perched on the edge of Fort Pond in Montauk the property boasts some of the most stunning sunset views in the area. The building, a previously relocated boarding house with layers of deteriorating additions was well sited but failed to take advantage of the vista and suffered from eras of partitions cutting the space up into tiny, dark rooms. Our plan ensconced a central bar with layers of dining cascading down in elevation toward the waterfront to provide every seat with a view of the sunset on the pond. Our design re-framed the windows, removing obstructing mullions and created new wide open access to the yard and outdoor dining terrace. We removed kitchy faux windows and a few stone lions and salvaged much of the existing cedar siding, unifying the new facade with modern screening elements a new cornice and green roof. The restaurant is at the same time elegantly modern and warmly timeless to create the friendly, familiar and neighborhood spot to watch the sunset at happy hour.
