New YOrk Public Library Mulberry Street branch

(Thaddeus Briner and Marta Sanders with Rogers Marvel Architects)

Client: New York City Department of Design & Construction
Size: 15,000 sf renovation
Location: New York, New York
Best Part: Weaving a ‘ribbon’ stair through an old cast iron and masonry building to draw light, air and people down into the depths of the former factory. By selectively removing floor areas, we connected the three levels dynamically to create an popular branch library in seemingly undesirable below-grade real estate. We uncovered windows into sidewalk vaults to animate the children’s area and transformed an abandoned sub-cellar boiler room into a grand reading room.
